ABOUT ME

Personal Profile

I have expanded my research interest in teaching statistics education, and currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction, majoring in mathematics education. Below serve as a background to my master studies journey.

I first learned about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) when I stumbled across the Esri website in the year 2017. My interest in the subject was instantly piqued. As a graduate student with a previous research interest involving GIS, I am crafting this webpage hoping to share my passion and journey in GIS. Meanwhile, this is also my personal online portfolio to showcase my past leadership involvements, work experiences, volunteers, etc.

PAST EXPERIENCE

What I’ve Done

MAIN INSTRUCTOR

August 2022 - Present

Teaching QUAN402 Basic Statistics for the Quantitative Methods Department. Crafting my own curriculum design to integrate students' procedural learning and conceptual understanding, with a swift focus from performance-based assessment to learning-based assessment.

GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

August 2021 - July 2022

Conducted a year of middle-school classroom observation and completed a research manuscript for publication.

GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT

August 2020 - May 2021

Worked for the research project named Educating with Evidences led by Dr. Grant Miller, dedicated to explore the teaching & learning of history with primary resources, 2020-2021

MATHEMATICS GRADUATE ASSISTANT, SIUC ACHIEVE PROGRAM

August 2017 - 2020

Serve as the main course instructor for Math 101 and single-handedly designed a study guide book tailored to Achieve Program students with various learning disabilities.

GIS INTERN, CITY OF CARBONDALE

June 2019 - July 2019

Serve as a new Planning & Development Management Intern. I cannot wait to explore and discover how my knowledge and application in GIS can be better improved and fine-tuned at the City Hall as an intern. Currently having fun working on different city projects on a weekly basis.

TRANSLATOR / ADMINISTRATION SUPPORT, SIU ACHIEVE PROGRAM

June 2019 - 2020

Serve as a Mandarin-English translator for communication between parents and officers. Occasionally include office administration job scope such as answering incoming calls, printing copies, answering emails, and tutoring students with mathematics difficulties.

EDUCATIONAL SUMMER INTERNSHIP, EMAGINATION TECH CAMPS

June 2018 - August 2018

Served as a dual positioned Program Coordinator (PC) and Teen Leadership Program Coordinator (TLPC). It was fun to be in-charged of all non-tech camp events and plan day/night games activities in a 24 hours camp setting for 2 months. Running daily leadership workshops for older returning campers was also a valuable teaching experience.

MATHEMATICS TUTOR, SIUC ACHIEVE PROGRAM

May 2016 - May 2017

This is my third on-campus job at Achieve Program alongside working as a barista at the Morris Library Delyte's Cafe during Fall 2016. My biggest challenge here was learning students with different learning disabilities need different supports, in order to help them be successful in own studies. Key quote: "Teaching students how to fish rather than feeding them with fishes alone."

BARISTA, SIUC MORRIS LIBRARY DELYTE'S CAFE

August 2016 - December 2016

Being a barista was one of my childhood dreams. I made my dream comes true by juggling between two jobs with this being one of them, before the approach of my bachelor degree graduation. No regret learning how to make coffee professionally from here!

RESIDENT ASSISTANT, SIUC UNIVERSITY HOUSING

January 2016 - June 2016

Was being trained with human rights and how to handle student residents gracefully. This was the job that helped me make friends from different background, cultures, countries, etc. It is still one of the best jobs I could have had because I learned many new things despite the short period of working time with them.

CUSTODIAN, SIUC RECREATIONAL SPORTS & SERVICES CENTER

June 2015 - December 2015

The second week I landed my feet in America for the first time, I landed my first on-campus job. This was an interesting job that requires night shift 11 PM - 3 AM and trained me to work harder for my school, reminded me that opportunities come by 90% hard work and 10% chances.

Learning and Living

August 2017 - Present

M.S. IN GIS, SIUC

CGPA: 3.714
Expected to graduate in May 2020.

Current research focuses on using Social Network Analysis (SNA) to studying public perceptions of the U.S. energy industry. GIS will be used to exhibit any potential spatial & temporal patterns from the SNA results.

June 2015 - May 2017

B.S IN MATHEMATICS, SIUC

CGPA 3.535 (Cum Laude Honor)
Graduated in May 2017.

Transferred from Sunway University in Malaysia as a junior undergraduate student. Personally believe the math course named "Transition to Higher Level Mathematics" was the most interesting and challenging class because it provokes thinking out-of-the-box.
